Update: Standoff Ends with Resident

UPDATE 3/11/14 -- Amarillo Police are releasing more information regarding Monday's standoff.

Amarillo Police recovered a handgun in the apartment, it was booked into evidence at the Police Department.

The male occupant was transported to a panhandle area hospital where he is currently being treated.

At this time, there does not appear to be any pending criminal charges.

UPDATE 4:30 P.M. -- Amarillo Police have confirmed that the standoff is over with a resident of the Park Place Towers retirement home.

Police say the man, in his 90's, was visiting with his wife in his apartment when he became agitated.  The man allegedly threatened suicide and was seen by Park Place employees holding a gun in his lap.

Personnel called police around 1:30pm.

When officers arrived, they too allegedly saw a gun in the man's lap and tried to talk him into putting it down.  When the suspect refused, the SWAT team was called-in.

After more than three hours, the man finally surrendered.

Since no one was threatened or injured, no charges are expected to be filed.  Police are treating it as a mental health condition.

AMARILLO -- Amarillo Police and APD SWAT are on the scene of a reported man with a gun at 1300 S Harrison.

Harrison St is closed from SW 12th Ave to SW 15th Ave. 

No shots have been fired and no one is injured. 

The call is confined to a small area within the building. 

Please avoid driving in the area.
