Under New Management: Amarillo Animal Control
By Kelly James | firstname.lastname@example.org
AMARILLO -- Amarillo's Animal Control Department will be under completely new management, soon.
Embattled Assistant Director Shannon Barlow announced her retirement today.
Barlow's retirement comes nearly two weeks after Director Nike McGee stepped-down.
Both had been on administrative leave while the investigation continues into the shelter's euthanasia practices.
The removal of Barlow and McGee is something critics of animal control have been clamoring for for months.
The city has already begun the process of searching for McGee's replacement.
Whoever that is, will eventually be responsible for filling Barlow's old job.
During the city council's work session today, they got an update on the search process.
Assistant City Manager Nob Cowell is heading-up that search.
He has hired an outside firm called Strategic Government Resources to recruit any potential candidates.
Cowell says third parties will also be hired to do an overall assessment of the shelter to make improvements where needed.
Cowell says he's currently searching for the third party assessment group.
Cowell says they'll narrow down the finalists to three or four candidates then bring in others to help vet each of them before they're hired.
The search process could take up to 120-days.
While Barlow and McGee are no longer in the picture. They may not be out of the woods just yet.
A Randall County Grand Jury is expected to decide tomorrow on any possible charges stemming from the investigation into the shelter's euthanasia practices.
