#CarbonFire in Wheeler County Est. 7,500 Acres, 30% Contained

UPDATE 7:53 P.M.:

According to the Texas A&M Forest Service, the fire is estimated at 7,500 acres and is 30% contained. They say there are no immediate threats.

UPDATE 5:09 P.M.:

According to TxDOT, I-40 in Wheeler County has reopened.

UPDATE 4:07 P.M.:

According to the Texas A&M Forest Service, the fire is now estimated at 6,000 acres with five percent containment. Crews are working structure protection on the south side of the fire. 


UPDATE 2:30 P.M.:

The fire is now being called the #CarbonFire and is estimated at 2,500 acres with zero percent containment.

Officials are reporting I-40 is shut down to the state line due to the fire. 

The fire has now jumped I-40 and is burning on the north side of the road.

UPDATE 12:58 P.M.

The National Weather Service in Amarillo is reporting the grass fire in Wheeler County is traveling on Interstate 40 east of Shamrock.


Shamrock Police report the grass fire is east of Shamrock by the Carbon Black Road.

Officials say the crews are just now getting on scene.
