Top of Texas Barber Battle Returns For 3rd Year

All of the competitions were judged on strict criteria

AMARILLO -

From fastest fade to best mohawk, some of the best barbers in the state showed off their technique today at the 3rd annual Top Of Texas Barber Battle.

Some of the best cosmetologists and barbers in the area put their skills to the test today in front of some of the most qualified master barbers in the country.

"You will always get a handful of the best barbers from everywhere to come out. It just depends on what competition and who's going to come out. There are just so many things, people are just so innovative and just come up with something every day, it's just always a surprise," Andre Steele, event organizer said.

Although it is held in Amarillo, most of the competitors are not from the Yellow City.

Steele explained, "It's hard to get Amarillo to really support it. Either they don't know about it or they just aren't interested. Getting Amarillo to come out would be a great deal.

It is not just a competition, but also a way for up and coming barbers to get advice about the business.

"It's my job for sure to share the knowledge I've learned over the years. A lot of times a lot of barbers that are starting to barber now, they see the whole fuss and the popularity of it and how cool it looks to be a barber, but they don't know everything that comes with it," Rob The Original Master Barber, said.

Jay Majors is this year's host and also hosts the largest barber expo in the world every year.

Majors explained, "It's cool to see the different styles. In the east coast, we have different names for different haircuts, we also have different hairstyles that we do out there. The business aspect of it is that people used to look at barbering as a hustle, but at the end of the day it is a full profession. It's a multi-billion dollar hair industry.

Last year this event was at the Azteca Music Hall, organizers said they moved it to Ocho Segundo's this year to give the event a more intimate experience for the audience.

All of the competitions were judged on strict criteria: degree of difficulty, precision, technique, and professionalism.
