The 52nd Season of "Texas Outdoor Musical": What to Expect?

CANYON - For more than half a century, "Texas Outdoor Musical" has brought people together under the sky of the Palo Duro Canyon.

We take a look at what you can expect for the 52nd season.

And how officials continue to make sure 2015's fatal firework incident doesn't happen again.

Ticket sales and phone calls come in, as "Texas Outdoor Musical"  prepares for another show.

The season kicked off last Friday night.

"It was really exciting, we have so many new people in this cast who have never been involved in Texas at all," said Marlee Wall, Actress.

New this year, the Managing Artistic Director says they've turned over many of their lead actors and actresses.  Like Wall, she says she started last year as an understudy but this year she plays Elsie, one of the main characters.

"Elsie comes from out of town and kind of starts a little bit of trouble with a couple of the guys in the Panhandle. It's a really great love story, everything works out in the end. But there's amazing dancing, singing and it just really gives that Texas feel the whole show," said Wall.

Despite a number of newbies, we're told this year's premiere was a standout.

"I think we had our best opening night in my 12 years as directing," said David Yirak, "Texas Outdoor Musical" Managing Artistic Director.

Extra precautions are also being taken to avoid 2015's fatal firework explosion.

"Certainly our biggest concern is that we never want this to happen again. It was a heartbreaking for the entire company. We've looked real hard at our program and we're doing whatever we can to make sure it never happens again," said Yirak.

This year's season ends August 19th.

Just like previous years, Yirak says there will be fireworks in the show this season.

He tells us he feels good about it or they wouldn't do it.

Yirak tells us they're not in touch with the victim's family due to a pending lawsuit.

He says the suit is against some of the Texas employees, not the production.

Because of the suit, they're not allowed to connect with the family.

But he says his heart goes out to the family.
