Beau Baker, Boys Ranch Rodeo competitor, says, "I wasn't doing very good in school so they chose to come out here. They thought it would be better for me."
Beau's from Virginia and has spent most of his three years playing sports at the ranch.
Beau says, "Football, basketball, track, baseball."
And, the ranch has given him the opportunity to do something that he's never done before.
Beau baker says, "I used to watch videos on people roping and I thought it'd be pretty cool, and I never got the chance until I came out here."
This is Beau's first year competing in Senior Roping in the Boys Ranch Rodeo.
Beau says, "Coach Heelers got me in and then he saw potential in my roping skills, and so he wanted me to do it year after year, so it's how I started roping."
Beau's been practicing almost every night, but preparing mentally's just as important as preparing physically.
Beau baker says, "There's a lot of good talk going. You have to tell yourself that you can do it."
With some coaching and practice Beau's hoping his newly-honed skills will pay off.
Beau baker says, "Hoping to win a belt buckle. This will be the first year if I do."
Beau says that he's been given a lot more opportunities at the ranch that he wouldn't have had if he stayed in Virginia. His goal for his future is to follow in his parents' footsteps and join the air force.
