Amarillo, Texas -
AMARILLO -- Sunday evening, Amarillo Police were investigating a report that someone used a BB gun to shoot out a vehicle window at a home in the 700 block of S. Tennessee.
While the officer was taking the report, the suspect vehicle drove by the residence. The officer saw the vehicle and tried to stop it in the 500 block of S. Prospect, but the driver continued to a home at 300 S. Prospect. There, he pulled into the driveway, driving across a curb and stopping over the sidewalk.
The officer approached the driver and had the man position himself on the ground. The suspect kept moving, would not comply with the officer’s directions, and would not take his hands away from his waist area. The officer used a TASER to attempt to take control of the suspect. The suspect initially appeared to comply. When the officer tried to handcuff him, the man started physically resisting efforts to take him into custody.
During his struggle with the officer, the suspect was able to pull a folding knife out of his pocket. He was trying to open it when assisting officers arrived. The man was taken into custody before he could open the knife.
Officers searched the vehicle and found a plastic bag containing nine smaller bags of what appears to be methamphetamine and two small bags of marijuana.
Michael Scott Opry, 23, was booked into the Potter County Detention Center for aggravated assault on a public servant, possession of marijuana under 2 ounces, resisting an arrest/search, manufacture/ delivery of a controlled substance over 4 but under 200 grams, possession of narcotic paraphernalia, and ten outstanding traffic warrants.
