Running Down a Dream One Turn at a Time

Sophomore Emma Perez is an experienced horse rider. Riding for 9 years. and barrel racing for 6.

"I won this belt buckle in 2010 for Champion Barrel Racer and Reserve Champion Pole Bender and in that same year I won Junior All Around. I won the Junior All Around Saddle in 2010. I won it because I earned it and that year we were competing with all boys and all girls in junior all around," explains Emma.

In this year's rodeo she's also competing in pole bending, and participating in honor patrol.

"My favorite is pole bending because I like weaving in and out of the poles," when Emma's asked what her favorite is.

Then, Emma's competitive side came out and she challenged me to a barrel race.

"Basically all you need to know is the basics and horsemanship to get started; basically to get him around the barrel, how to two-track, and side step, and make sure he doesn't cut in on you or the barrel will knock down."

I felt like i was in for the ride of my life. Emma made it look so easy.
The clock doesn't lie, and Emma beat me by two seconds.

The boys and girls competing in this year's rodeo have a Junior All-Around Cowboy's Saddle and an All-Around Cowgirls Saddle to look forward to winning.
