Egg-cellent Easter Egg Tips

- With Easter this Sunday, many parents may be looking for a fun and different way for the kids to decorate the family's Easter eggs.   One fun technique that you may want to explore is melted crayon Easter eggs.  The decoration possibilities are endless and limited only by your imagination!  Joan Gray Soria has some tips on how to make them.

1.  Put the eggs in a pot and fill the pot with cold water so it covers the eggs about 1-2″.
2.  Once the eggs come to a full boil, remove the pot from the stove and cover for 12 minutes (so they create a hard-boiled egg).
3.  Carefully remove the eggs from the pot and let them stand for about 1-2 minutes (the eggs will be very hot, so be sure to use tongs when removing them from the pot).  You may choose for younger children to use a bottle cap or egg cup holder a secure the egg from rolling so they will not have to hold the hot egg.
4. Using Crayons, start drawing on your hot egg.  Be creative. It's a lot of fun to try different patterns and to mix the colors. For our eggs I decorated, I smudged some of the colors in order to mute the hue.  You are now limited only by your imagination!
5.  Because of the hot exterior of the egg, the crayon will melt on the eggs surface.  Once your masterpiece is finished, gently place the egg into an egg holder and place it into the refrigerator.  They'll make a beautiful addition to any centerpiece - paired with other Easter decorations or simply on their own.  If you plan to eat your eggs, be sure to practice egg safety.

"Many people may be considering another technique of marbling their Easter eggs using food dye and shaving cream.  We would caution people to choose a different product such as non-dairy whipped topping instead of shaving cream for safety purposes.  Shaving cream is not an edible food product and should be avoided to prevent a chemical contamination of the egg in the event you plan to eat the hard boiled Easter eggs.  Egg shells are porous and could absorb the chemicals in the shaving cream and then contaminate the eggs for consumption."

Are Easter eggs safe?
Easter eggs are safe to eat if handled properly. Whether using hard cooked eggs for dyeing, decorating, or hunting, they must not be out of the refrigerator for more than 2 hours.
Before blowing out raw eggs to hollow the shells for decorating, wash the eggs in hot water and then rinse in a solution of 1 teaspoon of unscented, liquid chlorine bleach in 5 cups of water. Some raw eggs may contain Salmonella.

How long can you keep hard cooked eggs?
Hard cooked eggs can be stored in the refrigerator up to seven days, either left in their shells or peeled. Make sure eggs are refrigerated within two hours after cooking, and don't leave refrigerated cooked eggs out at room temperature for more than two hours.

How many hours may you leave Easter eggs out while hunting them?
The total time for hiding and hunting eggs should not exceed two hours. The "found" eggs must be re-refrigerated and eaten within seven days of cooking.  Hard-cooked eggs for an egg hunt must be prepared with care to prevent cracking the shells. If the shells crack, bacteria could contaminate the inside. Eggs should be hidden in places that are protected from dirt, pets, and other sources of bacteria.
