On Saturday, May 3rd from 9:30 a.m. to noon, the Amarillo Zoo and area artists are teaming up to offer children of all ages a fun and creative art adventure. Kids can make and take home their own art creations inspired by the colors, patterns and textures of the many animals found throughout the zoo. Explore patterns and colors inspired by African servals, shapes of a coiled green tree python, textures with the black bears and expressions with the wild mustangs.
“Art and animals are a natural combination. There are so many patterns, colors, and shapes in nature that can inspire creativity,” according to Mike Boley, Visitor Services Coordinator with the Zoo. "Kids will get an opportunity to learn from educators and volunteers how to express this creativity into a variety of different art forms designed to open doors of a child’s imagination."
Local celebrity artist, Andy Chase Cundiff will be on hand to show children the fun art form of drawing caricatures. A few lucky kids will even get their very own caricature of themselves courtesy of Andy.
The Zoo animals will also try their hands or paws at creating their own version of art. Visitors can watch the ring-tail lemurs “finger paint” their own watercolor masterpiece and enjoy as the lions and tigers express their own form of expressionism by tearing apart some artistically painted boxes.
Visitors can also see a special reptile-inspired art in the Zoo’s education center. Several exhibits will feature how the colors and patterns of lizards and snakes can be enhanced by colorful backdrops.
Other activities will include having your face painted in a special animal design by AmaDazzle (extra fee applies) and art activities lead by Auburn Adams of Burn Studio.
No need to make reservations, the activity stations will be set up throughout the morning while supplies last.
