Storm Shelters Coming to Quanah Schools

- Community-wide storm shelters will soon be built at Quanah schools thanks to a federal grant.

School officials applied for the grant about two years ago.

Last week, they learned they'll be receiving nearly$2 million from FEMA.

The money will be used to build two safe rooms: one at the elementary school, which will also be used as a gym, and the other at the high school, which will normally be used as a cafeteria.

The rooms will be open for all residents to use in the event of severe weather.

Ryan Turner, Reagan Elementary School principal, says, "The school is really the hub of the community. When we're given the opportunity to build a structure that can be dual purpose, that will serve our needs and the needs of the community and we're only paying 25 cents on the dollar. Seventy-five percent of this is being paid for through a FEMA grant."

The safe rooms will be 90 feet in diameter and made of concrete.

They'll be able to withstand winds up to 220 miles per hour.

Says he hopes construction will start in June and the rooms will be open by next storm season.
