Statement from Senator Seliger on School Finance Decision
AUSTIN, Texas --- On Thursday, Senator Kel Seliger (R-Amarillo) issued the following statement in response to the school finance ruling made by State District Judge John Dietz.
"Todays decision by Judge Dietz comes as no surprise. As a state, we have long struggled with finding the appropriate system to meet our constitutional obligation to fund public education," Seliger said. "While increased funding does not necessarily equate to improvements in student performance, the current mechanism by which the funding is distributed clearly needs to be addressed. I will continue to closely monitor the case as it is likely appealed to the Texas Supreme Court and the subsequent decision. In the meantime, I look forward to filing legislation in the next session that will increase district flexibility, reduce the high stakes testing burden on teachers and students, and more precisely align public school curriculum with the expectations of colleges and Texas businesses."
