AMARILLO -- The last of the evacuees from the Lake Meredith fire returned home Wednesday morning. But many returned to ash and rubble.
The Double Diamond neighborhood was one of the areas most affected, as about 60 cars lined up to return home around ten in the morning.
But again several didn't know what they were going to be returning to, due to the fact that around 225 houses burned up in the fire.
"As people go back into the homes we still have crews that are in there doing assessments as well as doing fire fighter duties," said Troy Ducheneaux with the Texas A&M Forest Service. "A lot of those homes that were destroyed still have hotspots in them so we're still working those to render those areas safe for the general public."
The areas will remained closed to everyone except emergency personnel and residents for the time being.
