(NBC News)  One year ago a powerful tornado tore through the city of Moore, Oklahoma leaving death and devastation in its path.

It was one of the most deadly tornado in Oklahoma's history.

A solemn tribute to those killed marked the occasion this morning.

Bells tolled in honor of the 25 victims of the twister that carved a 17 mile long path through the city during its 39 minutes on the ground.

Now the hammering of nails and buzzing of saws fills the neighborhoods that last year were piles of rubble.

Moore residents are keeping their promise to come back strong.

That includes Kim and Marty Schwab, whose rebuilt home is weeks away from completion.

"The true Oklahoma spirit is, we're here, we're gonna stay here," Marty says.
