CLOVIS -- Thomas Morgan, 27, of Portales, NM, was sentenced to probation for soliciting a child, using an electronic device, for the purposes of engaging in a sexual act, which is a third degree felony.

The charges stem from an undercover operation in which the Curry County Sheriffs Office posed online as a 15 year old female.  For approximately five days, Morgan began talking online with what he believed to be a 15 year old child via social media, email and text messages. On October 8, 2011, Morgan arranged a meeting with the child for a sexual encounter.  Morgan was taken into custody at the North Plains Mall where he set up the meeting.
Judge Tatum sentenced the defendant to three years of supervised probation and a requirement to register as a sex offender. Tatum stated to the defendant, "You're a predator on underage girls. This is a huge problem in our community. I am giving you a huge break on this."
The Court added conditions to the defendants supervised probation which will prevent him from being able to access the internet by way of cell phones or computer.
