UPDATE: SWAT Situation in SW Amarillo Ends; Suspect in Custody

AMARILLO - One crime leads to another, and an Amarillo man arrested after an hours-long standoff.

That standoff started with a traffic stop and a high-speed chase.

DPS Troopers said they tried to pull over 41-year old William Porter III on the Canyon E-way near Hollywood about three o'clock this afternoon.

That's when Porter allegedly fled leading police on a chase through southwest Amarillo, eventually ending on the 2800 block of Royal.

Troopers were joined by Amarillo Police and the Randall County Tactical Team after Porter allegedly holed-up in what police believe was his home.

The area was sealed-off as negotiators tried to persuade porter to give up.

During the three hour standoff, police were not sure if he had weapons or if anyone else was inside the home.

Just after 6 p.m., Porter gave up.

"DPS hostage negotiators were on the phone with the suspect.  He finally surrendered and was taken into custody without incident. No one was injured. So, it was a peaceful resolution which was the overall end goal," said DPS Spokesperson Sgt. Cindy Barkley.

Sgt. Barkley said Porter is being held in the Randall County Jail, charged with evading arrest.

He may face additional charges as the investigation continues.
