PORTALES -- Eastern New Mexico University’s Associated Student Activities Board (ASAB) on April 15th was named Campus Activities Magazine’s Best Campus Program for 2014.
The magazine, which covers entertainers, agencies and college programming, gives out the Best Campus Program award annually. Before ASAB’s win, the award traditionally went to a Division I school.
ENMU Director of Campus Life Draco Miller said that ASAB receiving the award is being called “an upset, as Winthrop University or the University of Akron normally wins. According to the editor, we beat out 14 Division I schools and many other schools our size.
“We’re on the national scene now. Every university or college who subscribes to the magazine or uses their entertainers or agencies will know about us,” Miller explained. “More entertainers and agencies will contact us.
“For the last two years, members and coordinators have worked extremely hard at getting ASAB’s brand out there and marketing to students,” Miller said. “Two years ago, ASAB averaged 174 students per show. We now average over 328 students per show.”
Miller and the members ASAB have started setting the fall’s calendar of events after hosting 31 events this year, including comedians Andrew Schultz and Dustin Ybarra.
“The students want more concerts, comedians, and other home-grown events, like the always-popular movie nights, karaoke night and Eastern’s Got Talent. We are also planning a Latin fiesta, Glow Party and Glow Roller Skating to name a few” Miller said.
ASAB also plans on bringing in big entertainers, including “a huge illusionist the first weekend of school. It will be a main stage Vegas-type show. He’ll make a motorcycle disappear.”Miller said that “ASAB has stepped up the game with the type of entertainment they bring to campus, to give the students what they want. Our network is expanding.”
