Common Core in New Mexico

- CLOVIS -- New Mexico is moving toward implementing a nation wide curriculum into their school systems.

Common Core is a curriculum focused on setting a nation-wide standard for Math and English, Language Arts.

The Common Core State Standards have been adopted in 44 states, but not here in the lone star state.

According to Texas State Board of Education member Marty Rowley, it's because our state curriculum standards are higher than those in the CCSS.

The Public Education Department in New Mexico hosted a meeting Wednesday in Clovis, breaking down what changes Common Core will bring.

Cindy Martin, Deputy Superintendent of the Clovis School District says the biggest changes are the curriculum's standards for math and english, and the depth in which they want those standards taught.

"Some of teachers have been expressing their dismay and how unhappy they are," said Martin. "However they're still being very professional and are doing what needs to be done for students."

The curriculum switch started last year in Clovis, when they implemented Common Core Standards for kindergarten through third grade. But as of this school year the standards are in effect for all grades.
