Utah: Marriages on Hold
By Danielle Leigh
(NBC News) The U.S. Supreme Court is putting same-sex marriages in Utah on hold.
The state is appealing a federal judge's ruling that its same-sex marriage ban is unconstitutional.
More than 900 same-sex weddings had occurred in the two weeks following that ruling.
"This is precisely the uncertainty we were hoping to avoid," Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes said after the hold was announced. "It's unfortunate many Utah citizens have been put into this legal limbo."
Utah is the first state to have a federal judge declare its marriage laws unconstitutional based on the landmark Supreme Court decision last year striking down the Federal Defense of Marriage act.
