(NBC News) U.S. officials are rushing to reassure the public that flying is still safe following the latest airline disaster.
A commercial jet airliner, Air Algerie Flight AH5017, is missing and presumed crashed.
The flight disappeared over Mali Wednesday night during heavy weather, with 116 on board. Reports of wreckage in the Mali desert have yet to be confirmed.
Earlier on Wednesday a TransAsia Airways flight crash-landed in Taiwan, killing 48 people on board, and just one week ago Malaysia Air Flight MH17 was shot down over Ukraine.
