Redskins Lose Trademark

- (NBC News) The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has denied the renewal of the Washington Redskins' trademarks, ruling that the professional football team's name is "disparaging of Native Americans."

The team's six federal trademark registrations have been canceled, but this does not mean that the Redskins have to change their name. It will just be more difficult to stop others from using it and profiting.

Ever since the Redskins nickname was registered in 1967 complaints of racism have been filed against it.

A previous case in 1999 was ruled the same way, and the trademark was denied, but ten years later the team and the NFL won an appeal in federal court and got back their trademarks.
