A federal judge Thursday dismissed the FAA's case against a drone pilot.
The Federal Aviation Administration had fined the pilot $10,000 for remotely operating a drone to film video for the University of Virginia Medical Center in 2011.
The judge determined the FAA doesn't have clear-cut authority to ban drone use.
The ruling is believed to be the first to address the issue.
The FAA can appeal the decision.
