Washington, District Of Columbia -
(NBC News) The weather in the western United States is either too wet or too dry, with both extremes resulting in some destructive weather.
Wildfires have spread to five western states, and have now scorched nearly a half-million acres, forcing thousands of people to evacuate.
"It just took off. I mean there was fire tornados spinning up. The entire column was turning," said Julian Murphy, a homeowner who has been evacuated.
Flooding in the western United States has also resulted in a landslide in North Salt Lake Utah, and flash flooding in Nevada that has shut down roads near Las Vegas.
