Drought Food Price Hikes

-
(KCRA) --California still has great produce, but the supply has lessened and prices have risen sharply because of the ongoing drought.

With farmers and growers using much less water, they are harvesting less food and producing at a higher cost.

At Ikeda's County Store in Auburn, Steve Ikeda said farm prices are higher, especially for nuts and vine-ripened tomatoes.

Nuts are a different story. Growing international demand for California nuts pushed supplies and caused prices to rise. Then came the drought.

Ikeda, whose family farms 30 acres of stone fruits and apples orchards, said it has been rough, but farmers are making due.
