(NBC News) The U.S. Supreme Court has essentially put an abrupt halt to a way some Americans were watching television on the internet.
The court says a company known as Aereo has to stop selling broadcasts of live television it wasn't paying for.
"This was all about re-transmission fees that the broadcast networks have been receiving from cable networks and satellite providers in recent years," explains TV Guide business editor Steve Battaglio.
Aereo wasn't paying those fees.
The justices sided 6-3 with the TV networks and cable companies, putting Aereo's future in doubt.
