Coming Soon: Talking Cars?
By Danielle Leigh
(NBC News) New technology allowing vehicles to "talk" to each other could soon change the way we drive.
The Department of Transportation has announced plans for auto manufacturers to begin installing vehicle-to-vehicle communication technology in all new cars.
The technology could warn of oncoming vehicles, crashes ahead and other hazards.
Transportation officials have already been testing the technology with eight major auto manufacturers.
Now they're working to develop standards by 2016 that would require vehicle to vehicle communication systems in new cars.
The advance builds on technology we have already seen put in cars, like lane assist and blind spot monitoring.
