(NBC News)  Former President Jimmy Carter will be the keynote speaker Tuesday evening at the ongoing  civil rights summit at the Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidential Library in Austin, Texas.

The summit marks the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which outlawed discrimination in public places based on race, ethnicity, religion or gender.
The summit kicked off Tuesday afternoon in the LBJ auditorium with a panel on gay marriage.
