The US Justice Department is filing charges against five Chinese officials in an investigation into hacking.

According to US officials briefed on the investigation, the Chinese officials are accused of hacking into US industrial companies to spy and steal secrets.

One US official says trade unions and steel companies were among those hacked.

The charges are said to be the first ever against Chinese state officials for what the US says is a widespread problem.
