(NBC News) Old Man Winter is strengthening his grip on much of the country, setting record lows in areas not used to cold.
187 million people are feeling the chill.
Atlanta opened a warming shelter to combat the cold, and citrus growers in Louisiana scrambled to get fruit out of the field before the frost set in there.
Chicago closed public schools for the second day in a row due to the cold, and 300,000 are without power in Indiana.
Weather related travel headaches continue as well.
500 Amtrak passengers stranded overnight outside of Chicago were rescued this morning. Snow and ice had covered the tracks.
They joined thousands of airline passengers waiting to get home.
