Bloomberg Fights NRA
By Danielle Leigh
(NBC News)There's a new gun violence prevention group hoping to rival the National Rifle Association, and former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is putting 50 million dollars behind the effort.
On Capitol Hill, however, the chances of implementing stricter gun laws appear to be slim.
It's not the first time that there has been a major push for gun control, but supporters of this new effort say this time will be different.
The group cites multiple reasons that this new gun control effort called "Everytown for Gun Safety" has a better chance of taking off, including focusing on the grassroots level and getting big money donors.
When former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg was asked on the Today Show about the purpose of his 50 Million Dollar donation to the effort, he replied that it was "to make sure we reward those who are protecting lives and make sure those who try to keep people from being protected lose elections."
Despite recent shootings in Fort Hood, Texas, and a Kansas City suburb just this week, Congress still doesn't have the votes for stricter gun laws.
