Amarillo, Texas -
AMARILLO -- The number of tips to Amarillo Crime Stoppers goes up every year, and in fact, 2013 set a record, but 2014 is on track to go even further.
There have been about a hundred more tips for 2014 over this time last year, leading to more arrests and cases closed.
With the ability to inform the group of illegal activity in Potter, Randall, and Carson counties, and easier ways to report, the numbers continue to climb.
"People can text, they can go online, or with their smartphone and do a submit a tip, with their iphone or their android, and those work really great as well because they can upload photos and geographic coordinates of the locations," said Corporal Sean Slover, Amarillo Police Coordinator for Amarillo Crime Stoppers.
More than just simply calling, the group makes it easy to send in your information, and even update the tip when necessary.
"The great thing about the web tips is we can talk back and forth without knowing what the IP address or the email address of the tipster is, so it's totally encrypted that way," said Slover.
Media promotion of the group and the added ways to give tips have allowed more information each year. Of course, the reward for a tip that leads to a conviction is extra incentive, but Slover tells us that it's not always claimed.
In the last four years, only 66% of the money issued for confirmed tips has been picked up.
Other events put on by Amarillo Crime Stoppers include their 7th Annual Shred-It Day at Market Street United from 10am to 2pm this Saturday, where you can dispose of your sensitive documents.
