It's no secret that beef is a big part of the Texas Panhandle, but controversy surrounds eating meat. Among the issues, many wonder if beef should be cut out of diets, why is it so expensive, and are there too many hormones?

Austin Voyles, from the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, clears up common myths. Voyles says meat contains ideal nutrients including protein, zinc and iron. The USDA recommends 5-7 ounces on your plate.

Voyles also says meat is expensive because it's a big business and the efficiency of livestock production.

When it comes to hormones, he says it's very low compared to other products. Thanks to continuous research, it's considered one of the safest food supplies.
