Higher Lake Levels at Meredith, More Activity

LAKE MEREDITH - Just like the lake levels, activity at Lake Meredith continues to rise.

As of this morning, officials say it's up to 75 feet and that means good things for visitors.

Park Rangers said the lake was a very popular stop this summer.

It's starting to get chilly but you wouldn't know with the number of people out on the lake.

"With the cooler weather, fishing is picking up, and Texas Parks and Wildlife have done a really good job of stocking the lake," said Carl Brenner, Park Ranger. "They put over 3 million wildlife fry last year and this year we have about 6,000 catfish went in; 87,000 bluegills."

One new business owner near the lake said he has seen a major boost since opening his shop this May.

"Business has been whopping this year," said Dave Wright, Owner, and Operator of Wright-On Bait, Tackle, and Watercraft Rental. "In fact probably exceeded projections times three. Unbelievable, the amount of people that have come back to Lake Meredith to enjoy this national park."

Brenner told us it has been years since they have seen the numbers they are seeing now.

He said a number of people coming to Lake Meredith, remind them of the heydays of when the lake was sitting at more than 100 feet.

"When it hit its high point in 1972, all the way up to 2000, we were crossing one million visitors every year. It started dropping until we got down to over 500,000 visitors. This last year 2016, we crossed one million visitor mark again and we're hoping to continue that," said Brenner.

With numbers for the year so far, Brenner said it looks like they will.

Brenner added the past rains we have had not only caused an increase in lake levels, but also an increase in vegetation. Which means more food for the wildlife

Wright said he is closing for the winter, but it was tough to do with the influx of visitors.

He said he plans on opening his doors earlier next year.
