"I Was Just at the Right Place at the Right Time"

A day out on the road with the family ended up being a day one man will never forget.

Jered Meeks says, "I was just in the right place at the right time."

He was driving down I-27 with his family, just south of Canyon on July 19th.

He saw smoke in the air, and as he got closer there were two cars on fire.

Meeks tells us, "as soon as I got out I could hear somebody moaning from inside this car, I mean it had just happened."

Other people were at the scene, and one man had a fire extinguisher.

Meeks is a certified EMT and grew up in a family of firefighters.

He took what he had learned, and put it into action.

"As soon as I broke the window, oxygen rushed into the car and the flames went up.  At that point it was light enough now that I could see somebody in the driver's seat."

He tells us he always carries a pocket knife, so he reached into his pocket and cut the seatbelt off the woman.

He then pulled her out of the car and with help from others carried her away, and called for help.

"Then I ran down to the other car that was on fire, but it was already completely gone."

He tells us he later found out no one in that car was injured.

Meeks says,"finally an ambulance showed up and we put her on a backboard and put her in the ambulance and i've never seen her since."

We asked him what he plans on saying when you can finally speak to this woman.

"I have no idea.  I really don't know, I mean, just to be able to shake her hand and give her a hug. I just, I don't really know."

On July 19th 30 years ago, Jered's grandfather was killed in a car accident on I-27 right outside of Canyon.

He tells us he believes being there ten days ago was exactly was where he was supposed to be.

Meeks tells us he wants to help out this woman and her family as much as possible.

He's even created a site to do just that.
