Hygiene Drive at Ellwood Park

AMARILLO - Volunteers gathered at Ellwood Park to give the homeless essential items.

Michelle Haney, the lead volunteer of the hygiene drive says, "Food Not Bombs on Saturdays feed people, anyone that might be hungry. And what I'm doing today is collecting hygiene products."

But where did Haney get the idea?

Haney says, "In one of my classes I discovered that we have a really big poverty level here in Amarillo along with a pretty big homelessness level as well."

There are many necessities the homeless need but one many may not think of is one you actually put on your feet every day.

Charles Parker, who attended the event says, "Socks really make a difference, we don't have access to washer and dryer and stuff like that, so it really makes a difference to have clean socks on."

Another goal of Haney's is to not just get individuals to help her out, but groups as a whole, much like Food Not Bombs and the Yellow City Community Outreach.

Haney says, "It's pretty great when you get the groups involved because within those groups a whole bunch of individuals who have a wealth of knowledge. You know, knowledge is power so the more people we have, the more people we can impact."

Haney says she wants drives like today's to begin happening on a more regular basis, which volunteers from other groups seem to agree with.

Sara Fuller, a Food Not Bombs volunteer says, "It's a lot easier if we're able to organize one big drive, that way we can get more items, like a larger variety of hygiene items you need. So, if we can do this monthly even that would be excellent."
