Amarillo, Texas -
AMARILLO -- People at the Hope Fest tonight got to hear about poverty in America from a woman who experienced it herself.
Star Parker is this year's honored guest.
Parker is the founder and president of "Cure". A non-profit that helps indigent people get off government help and back on their feet.
Before founding the organization, Parker spent seven years on food stamps living as a member of the working poor.
All proceeds from tonight's event went to Sharing Hope Ministry.
A place that provides services for women who are either incarcerated or in rehab facilities.
