The salute to heroes started a little 1:00 p.m., with hourly memorial services for all branches of the military.

Special discounts to park rides were available for for those with Military ID's.

Archie Sharp, the founder of Iron Soldiers say, "we're here to recognize the families, they still suffer every moment of every day. We're here to ease that, to meet them up with other gold star families so they have support."

The day began with a soldiers memorial run at Thompson Park.
