AMARILLO -- One of our hometown heroes was among the soldiers killed while allegedly searching for Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl.
34-year old Second Lieutenant Darryn Andrews died September 4, 2009 in Afghanistan.
Lieutenant Andrews was born here in the panhandle and attended school in White Deer and Borger before moving to Cameron, Texas during his high school years.
Five years after his death, Lieutenant Andrews' parents now are just finding out the circumstances around his death.
Andy and Sondra Andrews say they found out over the weekend about their son's mission to find Sergeant Bergdahl on Facebook of all places.
The Andrews say that Bergdahl should be treated as a traitor, not a hero.
The Andrews' have been speaking with the media for days now, since learning the details of their son's death.
According to the Department of Defense, Lt. Andrews died when a rocket-propelled grenade hit his vehicle. He used his body to shield two other soldiers from the blast.
Sondra Andrews says her son should not have been on this mission.
Five other soldiers were allegedly killed searching for Bergdahl.
The Andrews' are not the only ones calling Bergdahl a deserter.
Bergdahl's own former team leader also says that Bergdahl should not be considered a hero and that good men died trying to find him.
President Obama says we do not yet know the full details of sergeant Bergdahl's original disappearance.
No matter the details, he reiterated that America does not leave any soldier behind.
