Washington, District Of Columbia -
This is one of the biggest recalls for child safety seats and it is going to effect millions of families across the country.
Graco has agreed to recall 11 models of their child car seats seats amounting to about 3.7 million seats.
So, parents pay attention. At issue is the harness buckles used on all toddler convertible car seats and harnessed booster seats that were manufactured from 2009 to July 2013.
Now according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration the red release button in the harness can be difficult to unlatch or even becomes stuck. This is a major safety issue if the child needed to be removed from the seat quickly.
Now Graco made this move voluntarily but the government had called for the recall and they are asking for even more.
The safety agency says that seven more model seats also have problems and they are evaluating those models now.
In a statement, Graco said they've been working on the issue for a while now. A spokeswoman added, "this does not, in any way, affect the performance of the car seat or the effectiveness of the buckle to restrain a child."
And Graco says parents can continue using these seats while they wait for the recommended replacement part to come but the safety board disagrees. They say people should look for an alternative car seat in the meantime, until that replacement comes.
