General Dead in Afghan Attack
By Steve Handelsman
(NBC News) A U.S. Major General is dead following a gunman's attack inside an Afghanistan military training academy.
The two-star general, whose name is being withheld until his his family has been notified, was on a routine visit when witnesses say a lone Afghan soldier in uniform opened fire with his assault rifle.
He is the highest ranking American officer killed in Afghanistan, and the first two-star general killed since Vietnam.
A German general and more than a dozen U.S. and coalition troops were also wounded in the attack.
"This shooting is, of course a painful reminder of the service and sacrifice that our men and women in uniform make every day," said White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest.
In Afghanistan, so called "insider attacks" have killed 53 coalition troops in 2012. New safety procedures were put in place, and the number dropped to 16 last year.
