Your Football Team Loses- And You Get Fatter?

Football season is upon us and just as you prepare to cheer for your favorite team team, there's a new study that shows there may be more to a win or a loss than you ever thought.

In fact, a loss for the team could mean a gain for you.

The journal, Psychological Science took a look at what happens to fans the day after an NFL game and found that supporters of the winning team tended to eat healthier foods, while the losing team fans tended to eat more saturated fats and sugars.

On average, about 16-percent more than they usually ate on Mondays, according to researchers from the Insead Business School.

Fans of the winning team ate about 9-percent less saturated fat than normal and researchers said the difference was especially defined if the game was close, or an upset, or in a city with a strong fan base.

Researchers also tested French soccer fans.

So why does this happen? Researchers think that when a team wins it boosts fans self control. When they lose, people are more likely to eat because they feel an identity threat.

Also according to the research, the effect was more about an increase in saturated fat as opposed to an increase in calorie consumption. And researchers found similar results in both male and female fans.
