gainscville, Georgia -
About one in 25 US hospital patients get an infection during their stay.
That's according to a new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
The report is based on a survey conducted in 183 hospitals in 2011.
Researchers found patients acquired some 721,800 infections at hospitals that year.
Of those infected, about 75,000 died, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The study did not investigate how often an infection caused or contributed to the patient's death.
The most common were pneumonia and surgical-site infections.
They each accounted for about 22-percent of all infections.
