Colon Cancer Awareness Run Set for Saturday

- The Colon Cancer Awareness Challenge Run is held to help increase awareness about colon cancer, its prevention, detection and treatment.  The first 750 people to register will receive a participation bag and t-shirt. There will be a warm-up, fun along the path and music, as well as water and food at the finish line.

The race starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 22nd.  The 5k Challenge run has a fee of $20; the 2k fun walk/run is $15.  If you wait to register until race day, you'll add an additional $5.  All events start at the Amarillo Endoscopy Center located at 6833 Plum Creek Drive.  The deadline to pre-register is Thursday, March 20th.

Colon cancer rates and deaths from the disease are dropping according to the American Cancer Society.  The good news is attributed to increased cancer screening.  This 30 percent drop in incidence over the past decade comes during March, Colon Cancer Awareness Month.  According to the study, colonoscopy screening tripled among older adults.  Colonoscopy and other colon cancer screening tools are effective because doctors can find polyps and remove them before they become cancerous.
