Firefighter Injured Working Perryton Fire in March

Locust Grove VFD fundraising to help Cody Graves and his family

CANADIAN, TX - Cody Graves was a firefighter for the Locust Grove Volunteer Fire Department when he was called out to fight the large grass fire near Perryton back in March.

While fighting that fire, Graves suffered a back injury while on the truck. That injury has prevented him from working and ultimately resulted in his termination at the ranch where he has been living and working for several years.

But the Locust Grove VFD is stepping in to raise money for Graves and his family.

"We decided we wanted to do something for our own because it happened here in our station,"
Cody Mathews, a fellow firefighter said. "We need to take care of our brother, this is a family."

First responders who we spoke with say aside from being a great firefighter, Graves is one of the best cowboys they have ever seen.

Chaz Rutledge, Lone Grove VFD Assistant Chief, says that Graves "was a guy that would show up here anytime the bell rang. A lot of times he would beat us up here. Just every time he was needed, he was there."

Locust Grove VFD is offering an incentive for people who want to donate: for every $100 donated, you get a chance to win a 50-caliber rifle and scope valued at over $6,000.

Officials say that if you want to be included in the drawing, do not select to be an anonymous donor. They also say any gift, no matter how big or small, will be greatly appreciated.

If you would like to donate to Graves' gofundme account, click here.

There is also an account set up with Happy State Bank in Canadian that is taking donations.
