Fatal Plane Crash in Amarillo

- UPDATE 10:16 P.M.  We now know the name of the pilot killed Thursday morning in a plane crash in southeast Amarillo.  Ben Harned IV, 53, was the lone victim in the plane when it crashed on the 2100 block of south Mirror street.

The National Transportation Safety Board says Harned reported engine trouble shortly after taking off from Tradewinds airport just before 9 a.m.

Police say the plane's wing clipped a mobile home before coming to rest in the front yard.

The homeowner was in the shower at the time the plane struck his home.  Ismael Garcia says he thought it was a tornado.

Harned owns Performance Sports of Amarillo and had moved back to Tyler a few years ago.

Employees of Performance Sports says Harned often flew between Tyler and Amarillo.

The NTSB is investigating

No one on the ground was injured

UPDATE 11:16 A.M. -- Amarillo Police release more information on the plane crash.

The airplane struck the ground in a yard on the south side of a mobile home. A piece of the airplane or damage from a falling piece was visible on the roof of the home. There were no injuries reported from the home.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is on the scene to investigate. APD is assisting investigating agencies by providing traffic direction and crime scene processing. 

UPDATE 10:07 A.M. -- 
 Amarillo Police were called out at 8:44 a.m. to a small plane crash. Traffic is blocked off in the area. 

DPS is the lead agency in the investigation. They are waiting for the FAA and NTSB to report on the wreck.

AMARILLO 9:29 A.M. -- Amarillo Police have confirmed that a plane crashed in the 2100 block of S. Mirror and that someone has died.
