Community Leaders Tackle Meth Epidemic with Conversation Panel

AMARILLO - Final Hope Ministries along with help from Panhandle Mother's Against Meth held a Meth Awareness Conversation Panel Saturday Afternoon.

The panel included Amarillo Police Department Chief Ed Drain, Randall County District Attorney Robert Love, Potter County Sheriff Brian Thomas, and Hutchinson County Sheriff Kirk Coker.

Tony Rodriguez, event coordinator said, "It was something that the community didn't really know about and so we just wanted to have this event to make everybody aware of the problem."

Chief Drain explained more than 50 percent of property crime in Amarillo is related to meth. Other crimes like domestic and child abuse are also connected to meth users.

"In our community methamphetamine is probably the biggest problem that we've been facing for the last 15 years," DA Love said.

However, just because the problem is here in the Texas Panhandle, that does not mean that is where the drugs are coming from.

Chief Drain said, "They are bringing it up from Mexico in a liquid form and it is much cheaper than what they could do previously."

Darline Rudolph lost her son to meth and she does not want any parent to do the same. That is why she joined Panhandle Mother's Against Meth and is an advocate for events like this.

"If we can just stop one child, if I can keep one parent from having to find their child then it's a blessing," Rudolph said.

The chief says everyone from local law enforcement, to the FBI, to Homeland Security are doing what they can on the enforcement side. He continued to say the public can help by warning their kids and informing their children of the dangers by watching those they love and being aware of what is possible with drug abuse.
