CANYON – The City of Canyon is experiencing a mosquito outbreak due to recent rain.
The city is applying chemicals to standing water to help eliminate mosquitoes, and have begun spraying for mosquitoes every night (weather permitting).
It takes two nights to cover the entire City. The city sprays the parks each night
Things you can do around your property to help are:
Spray your yard and landscapes with insecticides that are available to the general public for the treatment of mosquitoes. One of the most common is Malathion. Mosquitoes tend to nest on the underside of leaves and in your grass, so if you can, spray your bushes, shrubs, and green areas. The best time for you to spray is early in the morning or late evening, when they are still nesting. Don't wait until dark, because that's when they begin flying to feed. These insecticides are available at most home and garden centers.
Eliminate all standing water around your property to prevent future mosquito reproduction. Remove old tires, tin cans, flower pots and buckets and change the water in birdbaths at least once a week. Any container holding water for more than four days can become a breeding ground for thousands of mosquitoes.
Control the amount of vegetation on your property. Keep your grass cut and landscapes well trimmed. Cut or remove weeds from the alleys. Large amounts of vegetation increases mosquitoes nesting areas.
If you have to be outside, use insect repellent that contains DEET and/or wear long sleeved shirts, long pants, shoes and socks to be fully protected from mosquitoes.
Remember the 5 Ds
1) Dusk and Dawn - avoid being outside during these peak mosquito feeding times.
2) Dress - completely cover up with light material or cotton
3) DEET - recommended insect repellent chemical
4) Drainage - rid your property of standing water
