AMARILLO – Thursday afternoon, Amarillo Police responded to a report of a man walking eastbound near the center median of the westbound traffic lanes of I-40.

An officer made contact with 35-year-old Kevin Jon Small near I-40 and Crockett. The officer advised Small that he could not walk on the expressway.

The Officer offered Small a ride off the roadway but he refused. Small told the officer that he was going to walk across the lanes of I-40.  The officer repeated that if Small entered the traffic lanes, he would be arrested.

Police say Small backed away from the officer, entering the traffic lanes while walking backward causing three vehicles to brake to avoid colliding with Small.

The officer pursued Small across the interstate, reaching him at the side of the roadway.  When the officer tried to take Small into custody, Small ran back toward the lanes of traffic.

The officer eventually took Small to the ground.   The officer had requested backup, but before any officers arrived, two or three motorists stopped and assisted.

Small was booked into the Potter County Detention Center for assault on a public servant, resisting arrest, failure to identify, and pedestrian in roadway.  The officer did not require medical treatment.
