Catholic Charities To Open Renovated Youth Shelter

- Catholic Charities will soon open the doors to its newly renovated Youth Shelter.

"It's kind of a whole new place,  Sonja Steelman, Shelter Administrator said.

The shelter has been around since the 70s, with little updates since its opening.

It serves as an emergency shelter for kids recently removed from their home or those transitioning between foster families.

"Our primary goal is just to keep them safe and get them to school and fed and, you know kind of carry them through their normal activities," Steelman said.

Catholic Charities oringinally raised more than $50,000 to put towards updates to the shelter.

Since the project began a year ago, they've received grant money from several local organizations, and the latest community assistance comes from area shoppers.

People donated stickers from United's cookware campagin, and the shelter got nearly $1,500 in cookware for its kitchen.

"I just think it's really been very heart-warming the way that there have been a number of different groups that have helped us," Steelman said.
