Car Plows Through War Memorial in Claude

Armstrong County Veterans Memorial

CLAUDE, TX - The Armstrong County Sheriff, Fleta Barnett, said someone drove through the Armstrong County Veterans Memorial, off Highway 287, late Monday night or early Tuesday morning.

The Sheriff said she saw tire tracks on the memorial wall when she arrived around 9:30 am Tuesday.

"They went through the sign," Barnett said. "Wiped out a light pole and then plowed into the memorial itself back here, knocking it and the flag pole down."

Barnett said the community is devastated by the destruction.

"It's sad that somebody would purposefully, or even not on purpose, destroy something that means a lot to this community,"  Barnett said. "This was built in recognition of Armstrong county's heroes from the war and it's just a very sad situation."

There is a small chance of solving this crime, Sheriff Barnett said they did find some clues left behind at the scene.

"We found an amber cover for a turn signal that belongs to an '81-'89 model Toyota," Barnett said. "We are looking for possibly a 4Runner or a pickup, dark blue in color."
The Sheriff's office is calling local tow companies and body shops looking for a vehicle that fits that description with heavy front-end damage.

If you have any information on this case, call the Armstrong County Sheriff's Office at (806) 226-3151.
